Sumu ya Chakula (Food Poisoning) Siku Mbili (Day 2)

Thanks to everyone who sent their well wishes to the Honey Badger, who frankly isn’t feeling so fresh. Many of you asked for updates on my food poisoning incident, so I’ll do it here. Warning:  it’s a little graphic.

When I woke this morning, I felt pretty good. Very weak, but decent. Then I tried to eat. Intense diarrhea started immediately, and it was pure water. As of 11:30 am, I have had at least 10 episodes, and there’s no end in sight.

This causes me great fear and frustration. I’m hydrating with the salts, but fluid is leaving me at a fast rate.  I am also feeling some twinges of nausea coming on.  I am afraid that if it doesn’t stop soon, I will be back in the hospital by evening. Nooooo…  My arm is still swollen and bruised from the last IV. I don’t want another.

I talked to my trusted local pharmacist from India, who frankly gives better advice than most physicians. He said I would be much better off with Ciprofloxacin, which is apparently the antibiotic of choice for food poisoning. He also gave me Imodium to stop the diarrhea, along with a good anti-nauseal. After all, if I can’t stop the fluid exit, I’m not going to get well. I’m not thrilled that the hospital physician didn’t give me something to stop the symptoms. I think he was too concerned with trying to admit me (= money) than making sure I was comfortable and could recover quickly.  He seemed angry after I refused to stay in a private room for three days.

I took the Imodium about 30 minutes ago and am anxiously awaiting relief. In the meantime, I’m going to sip on Sprite and try to sleep. I’m keeping my fingers crossed ?.

Then I’m going to veg out on Wallander shows:  the Swedish version. I see a binger in my future!

Thanks again for your concern. It means much to me.
