Sermon on the Mount [Meru]: Impromptu Gospel Choir

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for musical knowledge, for they shall be filled.

– Excerpt from A Chorister’s Beatitudes by Shirley W. McRae

Sometimes something joyous hits you when you least expect it. . . .

As is typical this time of year (heading towards spring), we haven’t seen any appreciable rain for some time, and the corn is drying out. It is turning part of the green African landscape a pale yellow. If you go outside where I am, away from busy roads and crowds, you can hear the parched stalks rustling in the breeze. It is a crisp, raspy sound and reminds me of the Wenas Valley after a hot, dry summer. It smells good, too. I like it.

It had been much cooler here, but as if on cue, Mother Nature cranked up the furnace as soon as September 1 arrived. It’s gotten noticeably hotter, so I have tried to take my daily constitutional in the morning or evening before the suns gets too strong or after it starts dropping.

Today I got out a little later than usual, but in retrospect I’m glad I did. I encountered goats, sheep, cows, and a few people, mostly children. They are always friendly, and the communion with nature and my neighbors nourished my spirit. But today, I received an extra special gift–one that I’m able to share with you.

Along the way, I passed a group of folks, and in the normal custom, we greeted each other. But what they did after I passed them brought tears to my eyes and made me turn around and go back.

They started singing a gospel song, and they were good–really good! The harmony was gorgeous. I told them they had the voices of angels, and I asked if I could video them. Fortunately, they agreed. Enjoy! Video link below.

And please, feel free to share.
