Ah, another sunny and beautiful Fall day in Tanzania! I could get used to this….
Life here is so different than in the US; some bad, but mostly good. One of my favorite things is the fact that I can get fresh, healthy, delicious food easily and quickly from where I’m staying. Because the food is “real” and ripe, it doesn’t keep long. So, I have to face the “onerous” task of walking into town each day and replenishing my stock. Today was so beautiful that I brought my iPhone with me and captured some of what it’s like to hang out in Tanzania.
Mayai (Eggs)
Friends, I can’t say enough good about the eggs here in Africa. We’re talking fresh out of the hen, with chicken poop on them to prove that not long ago they were basking in the warmth of a kuku’s belly. It gives me fond memories of gathering eggs at my grandma’s house when I was a child. Oh, the unbridled joy of reaching underneath a hen and retrieving treasure!
Not to make you feel bad, but this is probably how you “gather” mayai:
And this is how I gather mayai in the public market: Gathering mayai
Note that the seller carefully screens each yai to ensure quality and that I’m not gonna get an unpleasant embryo surprise. These eggs are absolutely delicious and fairly inexpensive: about $3 for 15.
After collecting my bag o’ eggs, I started heading home and came upon these dudes roller blading and skating through the streets: Skater Dudes What a joy to be surrounded by life in this city!
Mount Meru was ringed around with interesting clouds:
After reaching home, I was treated with yet another gorgeous Arusha sunset:
And finally, it is Ramadán, so the dates are here. I found some cream cheese and ate some until I nearly exploded. So simple yet SO decadent. I could’ve used some chives to top them off, but who’s complaining???
Now I’m fighting off the jet lag from last week’s trip home, which is keeping me up way too late. Heading to bed now, with images of cream cheese dates dancing in my head.
-Badger out.
I’m sure those eggs are so flavorful! It’s probably nice to head into town to get your food for the day except for those rainy days. Love the photo of Mount Meru and the sunset. It really is so pretty. I must try cream cheese with dates! I never would have thought of that combo. I have eaten then stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon which is so good! 🙂 Sleep well.
Love the update.
Dates with cream cheese is one of my favs. I bet those dates are so fresh!
