A few days ago, I wrote about a sweet experience I had with an African child, who really likes to draw. If you haven’t read it yet, see it here; you will have better context for this post.
Benjamin (that’s his name) returned this morning and took some time to sketch, this time a photo of me from my wedding day in Zanzibar.
Here is the photo he worked from, along with the finished product. It is not a tracing; he drew it by sight, and I had no input whatsoever:
NAILED IT!
I think it’s rather remarkable. No, REALLY remarkable. I especially love that he put a copyright symbol on it! I did not suggest that he do that.
Benjamin is a bright kid with potential and only 14 years old. Can you say, “Picasso?” How many other undiscovered talents are hiding in this big world of ours?
As I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to buy him some art supplies for his efforts if we managed to connect again (and we did). So, today I bought him paints, paper, a drawing pencil, colored pencils, and an eraser. He’s a prolific artist with a big portfolio, including some tattoos. I expect to see more great things from him.
This world can be a bit dark and depressing at times. This child proves once again that it is also full of light and joy, often found in such simple places. Enjoy, and find a moment today to show gratitude for the good around you.
Thank you, Benjamin, for adding to the richness that is my Dirty Freedom. We’ll be talking.
-Badger OUT!
He is talented! I love how proud he is of the work he does. I’m sure there will be many more drawings.
I love it! I think he has real talent. I’m glad he came back and drew your portrait.
